It’s not hard to see why so many people are opting to swap out their old manual thermostats for a nicer, newer model that offers more precise and convenient control. But with several models on the market now available for homeowners to choose from, you may not be sure which of these new options is the right fit for your home. We wanted to take a closer look at two of the most popular types of thermostats currently available, smart and programmable thermostats, and point out some of the benefits for each of them.
Programmable Thermostats
A programmable thermostat allows you to pre-set the temperatures you want for several specific days and even further, different times of those days. For example, if no one is in your home on Mondays, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, you can pre-set your thermostat to a temperature that would be too warm if everyone were home during that time – which is easier on both your heating and air system and your wallet – and then set it to cool back down to a more comfortable temperature shortly before everyone returns home. This is a much more convenient alternative to older, manual thermostats and will cost less to purchase than a smart thermostat.
Smart Thermostats
Smart thermostats are the most expensive option but may save you more money in the long run. These actually track the changes you make, from temperature to time of day, and learn over time what your preferences are. Once your smart thermostat has the data to predict your patterns, you can allow it to automate changes on its own. It will continue over time, becoming more and more accurate at controlling your heating and air system. Many smart thermostats can also be connected to your home’s wi-fi network. This allows you to change your thermostat settings from just about anywhere using an app. Many models also keep track of your energy usage, which you can access to get a visual representation of how much energy you’re using and when.
