Now that the leaves are falling, it’s time for your annual furnace safety check. Every furnace manufacturer recommends regular inspections and safety checks, but are they really necessary? After all, your HVAC system isn’t like a car, with spark plugs to replace. In fact, annual safety checks are not only about safety, but they’re also important for preventative maintenance. Just like going to the dentist twice a year, having your HVAC inspected annually could prevent expensive major problems when you can least afford them.

What Do Technicians Actually Check?

Every company is different, and there is no industry standard for a tune-up on your HVAC system, so the details on a thorough safety check will vary from business to business. Reputable firms will cover the major parts of your system, though, to give you a sense of security about your furnace lasting through the winter. Before scheduling someone to come out and work on your system, ask them what their inspection includes. They should at least mention:

  • Checking the vent system for blockages and leaks
  • Analyzing the combustion gases
  • Checking the blower access door to ensure it makes a tight seal at the face of the furnace
  • Inspecting the cleaning the fresh air intake louvers and grills
  • Inspecting the heat exchanger
